Momentus review: hype or hope for golfers?

The Momentus golf swing trainer is a weighted golf training aid that has been on the market for several years now. They sport the celebrity endorsements, but do their products deliver on the promise? What exactly is the promise, anyway? Sure, we understand how a heavier club will make our own clubs seem lighter, but will the Momentus line improve our game the $70 or so that it costs. Read on as we take apart the Momentus swing trainers in this review.

Benefits of the Momentus

The following benefits were obtained from the official Momentus website. We edited out most, if any hype or promotional language.

Momentus increases strength – in the hands, arms shoulders and back (all the important muscles of the golf swing) Adds distance to drives and accuracy to approach shots.

Maximize clubhead speed – (see previous) increased strength = greater clubhead speed.

Improve flexibility of golf swing – Increases shoulder turn and lengthens our golf swing.

Builds a Consistent golf swing – Counter-balanced weights of the Momentus Strength Trainer promote a balanced and on-plane path.

Promotes Balance in golf swing & improved feel

- Counter-balanced weights swinging along the correct path force us to follow them, helping us shift weight throughout the golf swing.

Momentus Signature Tour Iron

Momentus Traveler Iron (detachable for easy packing)

Momentus Indoor Iron (short shaft for low ceilings)

Momentus Strength Trainer (2-in-1 training aid)

Effectiveness of the Momentus

We ignored the usual touting of PGA Tour stars like Fred Funk and numerous golf instructors we have never heard of, instead trusting online survey respondents, and actual product tests.

Each of the product testers used the Momentus golf swing trainer each night for a set number of swings before bed. We then ranked them from our testing phase in order of maximum to minimum effectiveness.

Momentus golf increases distance – Try an average increase in 2 weeks of 10%. Future increases would likely not be as dramatic, but imagine taking your 5 iron from 175 to 192 in two weeks. Better yet, increase your driver distance from 250 yards to 275 yards in a fortnight. That’s a big woo-hoo for us muscleheads!

Momentus increases strength – We were a bit skeptical about this. C’mon, 2lb 6 oz? Testers found it definitely provided resistance. A 100 swing test limit per night was more than enough.

Improve flexibility of golf swing – Honestly, this was one benefit we had not considered before testing. The added weight does extend the body past it’s previous positions. Just like in the weight room; light weights with high reps increases fluidity, and stamina. Most golfers (like myself) did not understand how crucial flexiblity, not pure strength is in increasing distance. The Momentus worked great in this area

Maximize clubhead speed – Made the tester’s normal clubs feel like they were swinging a Q-tip. This hurt the accuracy a bit, as tempo is key. Used on a regular basis, the swing would eventually get more solid.

Momentus Golf product line

This right here is a winner – they put out many other items besides their stock iron. They also now offer:

Momentus driver – so we can get used to the flatter swing plane over an iron shot

Momentus Inside Driver – We thought this was the absolute coolest. Safe to use in rooms with as low as 8 foot ceilings. Now we can practice in any room of the house (peace and quiet).

Momentus Strength Trainer – This has a dual-weighting system that has excercises geared to the longer approach shots. We found the excercises to be quite useful for the overall swing, even without the Momentus training aid. We dare say we liked this club better than the original (shh!).

Complaints about Momentus Golf products

You can not hit balls with the product. While it would be great if we could hit balls with the product, it would not give us any worthwhile feedback. If you insist on being able to hit a ball, use whiffle balls.

The second complaint about the Momentus was about the high price. Back when the product came out, it was around $100 dollars (USD). Perhaps that was expensive. Now though, they run around $70 USD or less. If you cant afford $70, what are you doing playing golf anyway? Not in my foursome ; ) I won’t even mention the review where they suggested building your own club. All you need is a huge saw, some weights, glue, blah blah – I have a high value on my time. Why spend a whole day going to the hardware store to build a piece of junk. It’s called specialization!

We of course don’t like over-hype in any products, but we do understand they are selling a product. If you are a beginner, do not expect miracles in your swing. The Momentus swing trainer would be great for intermediate to advanced players, golfers trying to build strength, or for elderly golfers.

Momentus swing trainer: Bottom Line Review

The club is no magic cure-all, and it doesn’t quite match the Refiner or the Medicus in terms of overall improvement to our game, but their ability to deliver on their promised benefits, diverse line of products (love the indoor versions!), high quality, and lower price make this a definite buy!

4 of 5 stars:
